Looking for my first Gem

I enjoy researching family history and I need a new challenge!
I am on the lookout for an interesting object (gem) as a starting point.
It could be an old postcard, a military medal, a needlework sampler or an object such as a watch or tankard with a message inscribed on it. From the object I'm going to see what I can find out about the person who owned the object and their family. Who knows where this will lead.......
